Working Principles of the Lighting System Creator:
The Lighting System Creator (LSC) is the first and only online tool of its kind that enables the user to seamlessly
create an entire lighting system solution from standard components while leveraging LM-80 data. All other available
light source selection tools require the user to select a junction temperature or a thermal model to run
simulations. The LSC leverages a proprietary algorithm that automatically determines the optimal current and
temperature to meet target flux, efficacy and L70 lumen maintenance values from a minimum set of input parameters.
Furthermore, based on a user-selected target application, the LSC suggests the most appropriate system component
solutions such as connectors/sockets, optics, driver and thermal management solutions. The LSC will even automatically
suggest the most optimal series/parallel light source layout for the light source drivers.
There are 3 steps to fully leverage the LSC:
Enter system level details
Select and refine light source
Select system solution components
Step 1: Enter system level details
The first step is to enter the system level details that define the target application and its respective target
specifications (see screenshot below). This step will identify the most appropriate light source technologies
that are commonly leveraged for the selected application and will automatically select the candidate light sources
to be displayed to the user based on a number of factors, including the total light source cost.
Step 2: Select and refine light source
The second step consists of selecting the light source from a list of candidates that all meet the target
specifications. The candidates are grouped by light source technology such as packaged LEDs, COBs and arrays,
board level light sources, and integrated light engines. Once the light source has been selected, it is possible
to modify certain parameters such as the flux and forward voltage bins and to group the light sources in clusters
or boards.
Step 3: Select system solution components
The third step consists of selecting the system solution components such as light source accessories (connectors,
sockets, wire harnesses), optics, drivers, and thermal management solutions (extrusions, heat sink, active cooling
solutions). The tool will suggest solutions based on (but not limited to) the following criteria:
Target application
Target specifications
Selected light source
Light source count
Board/cluster count
Light source forward current
In-Situ Temperature
Component dimensions
Once the user has selected the system solution components, a complete lighting system will have been defined where
the user will be able to generate a report for further analysis.
